Who Is Lily Schurra
Lily Schurra is in-house counsel at Sourcegraph, an AI-powered code intelligence platform. Her career bridges legal practice and legal technology in a way few resumes do: she's led legal operations for in-house teams, led implementation for a leading contract lifecycle management company, advised early-stage legal tech startups and in-house teams through her own consultancy, and personally evaluated dozens of legal tech tools along the way.
What's one accomplishment you're proud of?
For Lily, the proudest accomplishment is the shape of the career itself. "I have spent my career being told I'm doing things against the norm," she says, that attending a small, regional law school would confine her to practicing in one region, that success in law meant following the conventional path. Instead, she built something else: a career aligning law, legal operations, and legal tech to make legal teams' work easier and more efficient. "I've built a career that aligns with who I am and what interests me most."
Who has influenced or helped you on your journey?
Lily points to a close-knit, informal network of legal leaders who've helped her through her biggest obstacles, people who've acted as a sounding board and helped her navigate career challenges. "Having people in my corner who have already solved the problem in front of me, or who can help me think through it and provide perspective I wouldn't otherwise see, has been the most valuable resource in my career."
Why advise for Sandstone?
Drawing on years spent evaluating legal tech from the inside. "Before Sandstone, legal technology has largely focused on improving individual tasks or automating specific workflows," she says. "That work has real value, but it does not address the core problem: legal has lacked the context needed to understand the broader picture. Until recently, the underlying technology simply was not capable of solving that problem." Sandstone, in her view, is the first real answer to that gap, one that "positions legal as a true business partner rather than just a more efficient version of its prior self." As she puts it: "I knew from the first demo I saw that I had to be a part of what Sandstone is building."
